Franco Pulicati is an extraordinary individual whose life story is a beacon of relentless determination. Watching him in action is nothing short of an eye-opening experience. I first saw him soaring down the paths of Villa Borghese on a brisk March afternoon in 2006. At the time, he was in his 60s, showcasing athleticism that made me question the limits of human ability. Now, nearly 30 years later, at almost 90, Franco challenges the norms surrounding aging. His unwavering spirit leaves us to ponder what incredible feats we might achieve if we shift our mindset.

Early Life and Challenges

Born in February 1938, Franco’s journey began with adversity. Doctors anticipated grave challenges after he was born prematurely. However, he defied expectations from the start. He recalls, “The doctors said if I survived, no one would be able to kill me because I have a will to live. This story is important for me because it reminds me of the spirit I was born with.” This fierce determination became the cornerstone of his life.

A Life in Motion

Franco’s passion for sports has defined his existence. His early days as a boxer positioned him for a chance to compete in the Rome Olympics. At just 12 years old, he teamed up with Italian circus performer Moira Orfei. Throughout his life, movement has been his essence. His talent did not go unnoticed. Franco became a sought-after performer, gracing various Italian TV shows.

In 2014, during a performance on ice, his act captured the attention of the creators of Ghiaccio Spettacolo. This led to an exciting summer tour across northern Italy with renowned figure skaters Anna Cappellini, Luca Lanotte, and Olympic champion Carolina Kostner. In 2016, he participated in the Well Over Fifty Festival in Montenegro, inspiring many to view aging differently. The following year, Franco took his talents to a worldwide audience when he appeared on NBC’s “Little Big Shots: Forever Young” with Steve Harvey.

Innovations on Skates

Franco's skills don’t end on the ice. As a former carpenter, he channels his creativity and manual skills into improving his skating experience. He's crafted numerous adaptations for his gear, including wrist braces and knee guards equipped with additional wheels. He even designed skate shoes with homemade slider pads.

Moreover, he constructed his own monopattino—a customized, battery-powered scooter that allows him to glide effortlessly on his skates and perform daring stunts across parks. This innovative spirit illustrates that age is just a number, and creativity knows no bounds.

Secrets to Longevity

When discussing his secret to longevity, Franco offers straightforward insights. “I eat normally, bread with tomatoes, whatever I have at hand. I don't follow diets or take vitamins. I drink little, but if I want a beer, I won’t deny myself,” he says. His vitality stems from a non-restrictive diet comprising fruits and, interestingly, a liter of Italian cow's milk each day. Though nutritionists might raise an eyebrow, this routine works for him.

But the true essence of Franco’s youthfulness lies in his perspective on life. He emphasizes the importance of transforming negativity into positivity. He believes that disappointments, including health struggles and the trials of war, cultivate inner strength. “From disappointments, pride and ability are born within you, making you live better,” he shares. Franco sees age not as an obstacle but as a motivator to pursue passions and relish life’s simple joys. “I live life to the fullest, discovering new things within myself every day with the same will to live that defied all odds almost a century ago.”
